My hope for this blog is to help fight the stigma associated with Mental Health/Illness and to reach out to those in the cyberworld that are feeling as if they are alone. Mental Health issues are still pushed under the table far too often. I read a quote the other day (that I forgot to write down, so I am paraphrasing) about how we as a society can talk about cancer, AIDS, etc but when it comes to mental illness there is still a shroud of secrecy placed over it way too often. This , in my opinion, is one of the reasons why people are afraid to seek help for these types of problems. What will my neighbor/coworker/family think if I start going to a psychologist/psychiatrist/social worker? With that thought in mind too many people wait until the last possible minute and there is no other way. Even then people are often times afraid to reach out for the help they need.
How do we change this? We can change this by spreading the word, by getting involved with maybe your local NAMI group, or one of the NAMI walks, or similar associations/events.
For now, I would like to ask you if you might be willing to share your story on my blog. I would like to start a (semi) regular guest blog that I would post on Mondays. Twitter has the hashtag of #MentalHealthMonday (a searchable item that people use to promote Mental Health Awareness) and I would like to expand it to my blog. I can post your guest entry anonymously if you are uncomfortable with the idea of your name being attached to this. You don't have to be an expert writer, I can proof read if you feel that that is needed and it can be as long or as short as you want. If you are willing to do this please email me at JourneyThroughLifeblog@gmail.com so that we can talk about this.
