A great step forward

Luke has been unable to work because of his mental health issues since he got honorably discharged from the Navy in August 2007. At first he enjoyed it. After all, it seemed like a permanent vacation. Who wouldn't like that? But after a while that notion wore off. It is now cause for repeated bouts of depression. He is going to be 26 this year and he is 'supposed to be' the man of the house and bringing in the bacon. He does have income from the VA and he also receives SSDI but he stays at home. I had been trying for a long time to get him to volunteer somewhere but until recently he was not ready to do that. A few weeks ago he volunteered at nursing homes for a few hours and today he is starting a regular volunteer 'job' helping with Habitat for Humanity! This is a project that is just starting out so it will offer him regular opportunities to get out and help. Wish him luck!

Hi! I found your blog via SITS blog frog community... the Habitat volunteer position sounds fantastic! Best of luck to him--this could be just what he needs to lift his spirits! Thanks for sharing your story!

Sadly, they had too many volunteers today and while that is a wonderful problem to have it meant that L got sent back home. I am immensely proud of him for actually going though. They are meeting again next week and I am hoping he will try again.
